Here we have Cam Newton, quarterback for the Carolina Panthers and 2016 NFL MVP. Over 100 million people watched as this guy fought hard but lost to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in this past season’s Super Bowl 50. So many gave him hell for his conduct after the game, calling him a bad sport. Some even went so far as to attack his race because of his victory dances. In the world of sports, pretty much everyone knows who Cam Newton is.
But apparently, Tuesday night’s “Celebrity Jeopardy!” contestants had no clue as to who he is. The answer was “The Carolina Panther who was the first NFL rookie to pass for over 4,000 yards,” with the obvious question being “Who is Cam Newton?” But somehow, Anderson Cooper, Michael Steele, and Lara Logan remained quiet. “We don’t do sports,” proclaimed Logan, after standing there awkwardly for several moments.
Anderson Cooper, the host of Anderson Cooper 360, is a brilliant political analyst and news anchor. He also does correspondence regularly for 60 Minutes. Michael Steele is also a political analyst, who works for MSNBC. He was the Republican Party’s National Chairman from 2009 to 2011. Lara Logan is the chief correspondent in foreign affairs for CBS News as well as a correspondent for 60 Minutes.
You might think that these credentials speak for themselves and this group should know who Newton is. But when you think about it, these three individuals report on major news occurrences and just aren’t avid sports fans. Who knew there were actually still people in America that aren’t obsessed with professional sports?!
